The San Diego Civic Dance Association, (a California 501 (c)(3) non-profit, public benefit corporation), is dedicated to supporting, promoting, and enhancing an appreciation of the arts through the San Diego Park and Recreation Dance Arts Program. Comprised of 30 volunteers, the SDCDA works tirelessly to provide additional funding in areas that benefit all 2600 dance participants. Some of these include:

  • Workshop funding
  • Additional concert opportunities
  • Enhancement of stage equipment, sets, and production staff
  • Shoe recycling program
  • Costume design and fabrication
  • Scholarships
  • Cast parties
  • Equipment enhancement/replacement*

*Our most recent, and ambitious undertaking has been to begin replacing the old, damaged, and unsafe flooring in the Casa del Prado dance studios in Balboa Park. We have pledged, and continue to raise $40,000 needed to install sprung, maple hardwood flooring in two of the studios, replacing the inadequate linoleum that exists. The San Diego Park and Recreation Dept. has granted matching funds to help us accomplish this necessary repair. This new flooring will provide the only equipment necessary to ensure many decades of safe, healthy dance for at least five dance groups in our community that use these studios daily. However, additional studio floors remain in need of attention.

In order to continue providing essential items such as these, it is important to obtain financial help from the citizens, and corporations of our San Diego community. If you wish to contribute desperately needed funds, the dance community will appreciate it greatly. Please contact us at: SDCDA, 2125 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101 - (619) 702-3408. All contributions are tax deductible, and any help is welcome!

Dance is the artistic expression that nurtures the body, mind and spirit! Since 1942, hundreds of thousands of San Diego's children and adults have proved this to be true by participating in Civic Dance Arts—a program operated under the auspices of the City of San Diego's Park and Recreation Department. For over 60 years, our dance programs have fostered positive attitudes, healthy bodies and enhanced self-esteem—this program does improve lives!

Our children come from very diverse cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Scholarships and fee waivers make it possible for every young student to train in the art of dance regardless of family income limitations. Right now over 2,600 children at 25 recreation centers throughout San Diego are training in the art of dance—a safe, healthy activity for our young people offered outside of school hours.

Each January and February at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park, students participate in Dance Collage—more than 10 professionally-produced shows—for a potential audience of 10,000. Because the City of San Diego requires us to be a 100% cost recovery program, financial support from donors like you is the only way we can continue to showcase our young dancers in concert.

Please consider underwriting all or part of the expenses associated with Dance Collage. Your contribution will go toward costuming, props and sets, guest choreographers, lighting and sound equipment and other production costs. Help us to continue this long-standing tradition of inspiring these deserving, ambitious and talented 12–19 year-old performers.
