Dear Dance Enthusiast & SDCDA Supporter,

THANK YOU for taking a moment to consider and/or recommit your financial support of the San Diego Civic Dance Association, Inc. We are the fundraising vehicle that supports the City of San Diego’s Park and Recreation Civic Dance Arts program. Since 1942, that’s over 80 years, Civic Dance Arts has served as the crowning jewel in our fine city’s performing arts scene. Now post-pandemic, we are enthusiastically seeking more participation, audiences, and dancers than ever before. Having weathered the storm of Covid successfully, we are thrilled to be regaining our financial strength and continue our strong presence on stage for our audiences. San Diego Civic Dance Association, Inc. is proud to support Civic Dance Arts, and provide expanded programs and performance opportunities for all of our dancers. To realize our full vision, however, we need financial support from the community, from people like YOU!

While dance class tuition covers the cost of classes, San Diego Civic Dance Association, Inc. works to provide the program with both the financial and volunteer time necessary to make all of the other events and components possible. Each year, our volunteers donate over 20,000 hours of their time to this program, providing everything needed from setting up stage lighting and sound equipment to interviewing candidates for our scholarships and financial aid programs for costumes…and more!

For budgeting purposes, we ask that you consider making a regular, monthly tax-deductible donation to San Diego Civic Dance Association. While one-time donations are definitely welcomed, these on-going donations allow us to better plan for future events and opportunities.

We are excited to be a part of the national dance scene, and look forward to providing a wide variety of opportunities to our dancers for years to come. Donations, grants, and ticket sales, in combination with the donation of volunteer hours, have made our program stronger and more vibrant than ever. Without the existing support, these past 4 years through the pandemic would not have transpired in the same way, as many arts organizations suffered in communities across the world. Civic Dance Arts was able to remain afloat through increased commitment of time and creative approaches to navigating those difficult years.

As one of the Nation's most unique public dance programs, Civic Dance Arts offers over 200 classes to nearly 3,000 students, ranging in age from 3 to older adults. We provide beginning dancers with their earliest exposure to dance, though many people keep dancing with our program into their senior years. We know that activity and social connection is what keeps us young and we believe that dance serves both purposes beautifully. Civic Dance Arts includes the opportunity for the more advanced dancers to audition for one of our four Companies, ranging in age from 8 to Senior Citizen. Education and entertainment are provided to schools and community groups in Balboa Park, and all over the county, with the goal of introducing the love of dance and appreciation of the arts to San Diegans for years to come. Our Education Shows in February and our intermittent performances at community events, like Parks After Dark and the San Diego County Fair, allow us to connect with citizens and visitors in meaningful ways.

Civic Dance Arts has regularly enjoyed rave reviews for Collage, our annual dance performances in February. Our wonderful recitals season in June typically includes 13+ shows over 3 weekends where families and friends soak in all the joy their dancers bring to the stage, showcasing their year’s worth of practice and rehearsal. We annually invite and host guest choreographers from places as far as New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Los Angeles, showcasing their choreography through our Collage performances. We were even able to bring in internationally known choreographer Mia Michaels for an inspirational and amazing master class a few years back. Our annual holiday showcase at Balboa Park’s December Nights is a free event, enjoyed by all. Pre-Covid, scholarships and financial aid were awarded to nearly 35 dancers, including the Bonnie Ward College scholarship for graduating seniors. Our hope is to return our scholarship and financial aid program back to full health, which will be made possible by your generosity. We thank you, again, in advance for considering your financial support.

We encourage you to be part of the future of San Diego Civic Dance Arts & Association and its diverse range of programs by becoming a donor. Your tax-deductible donations help support the production costs of our Annual Recitals, our educational programs, financial aid, scholarships, specialty workshops, teacher development, and our advanced companies throughout San Diego. Your contribution ensures that volunteers and staff at Civic Dance Arts receive the critical financial support needed to continue this important service to our community.

As we have since Civic Dance Arts began in 1942, we THANK YOU and everyone who has contributed to date. You helped make us the amazing and unique program that is San Diego Civic Dance Arts!

Sincerely, Mary Findlay, San Diego Civic Dance Association, Inc.
